WALL TILES INSTALLATION STEPS
Thursday, March 11, 2010
TILES INSTALLATION STEP BY STEP PROCEDURE

1. To ensure that you have a level base from which to commence tiling, set a batten horizontally one tiles above the lowest point of fixing. Use a spirit level to make sure that the batten is set level.

2. Start tiling by spreading tile adhesive with a notched trowel. Not more than a square metre should be covered with adhesive at one time. Set the first tile at the middle and work out on either side to ensure that the cuts are equal at each end.

3. Place tiles into adhesive bed using a firm twisting movement so that there is a good, even contact between tiles, adhesiveand background. To ensure that the tiles are even jointed use tiles spacer pegs.

4. Before fixing border and profile tiles check how the joints bond. If they are a different width to the main field tiles, staggered joints are preferable and will look less obvious. Use tile spacer pegs to ensure even joints.

5. Cutting curved and irregular shapes, to fit around pipework for example, mark the shape on the tile and by using tile nippers create the shape you need. Finish off using a tile file to smooth any rough edges. It is recommended that goggls are worn during cutting.

6. Tiles can be cut using a tile cutting machine. This makes cutting easy and accurate. Tile cutters are available at all good tile outlets and for hire from tool hire centres.

7. When the tiles adhesive is dry, fill the joints with grout. This should be worked into the joint flush up to the file edge. Remove any excess grout with a damp sponge before it dries. There are tools available to assist spreading the grout.

8. clean off the tile grout residue by polishing the tiles with a clean, dry cloth.

PLANNING AND DESIGN TILES

PLANNING AND DESIGN

The planning and design of a tiled floor or wall is a phase in which an individual decides what materials should be used for each layer and how to install the tiles. A thorough and good knowledge of your 'soon to be' tiled surface is important - this will avoid any complications or issues in the future.
There are five steps to planning and design, these consist of:

1. Analysis of the project data
2. Choice of materials
3. Choice of installation system
4. Size and expansion of joints
5. Composition of the system and dimensions of each layer

1. ANALYSIS OF THE PROJECT DATA

Type of Environment

It is important to consider the environment in which you are going to lay your tiles. Are your tiles going to be laid horizontally or vertically? Can severe climatic changes be expected and will they alter your tiles? Is the tiling residential or commerical? What exposure of activities will my wall or floor have? Are the tiles on the interior or exterior of the building? All of these elements will assist you in creating the best tiling possible.

Type and characterists of the structure

The structure that you are using to place your tiles onto must be examined. It is important to be aware of the behaviour of the area - any dimensional variations, flexibility and elasticity issues and thermal expansion reactions. Taking note of any alterations or changes in the surface are very important to note.

Geometry of the surface

The geometry of the surface to be covered can infulence the choice of size and shape of your tiles, their disposition and the choice of the technique in which the tiles are installed.

2. CHOICE OF MATERIALS

Tile Bed

The range of choices for the tile bed are quite broad and can be divided into two suitable categories - cement mortar (applied thickly) and adhesive (applied thinly).

Cement Mortar

Generally, mortar composes of cement, sand and clean water. This is expected to form a paste. Mortar is applied thickly, and topped with a dusted layer of cement to ensure the best adhesion.

Adhesives

Adhesives are an easy and common material used for tiling. They are becoming increasingly popular, and are readily available or can be mixed. Various types can be bought, it is best to inquire as to which is best for your base.

Grout For Joints

In regard to the choice of material to fill the spaces between the tiles, there are a huge range of available grouts extending beyond traditional make-ups. Various compositions and colours are available for both flexibilty and creativity.

3. CHOICE OF INSTALLATION SYSTEM

You can choose to lay your tiles using two methods - 'open joints' and 'closed joints'. Closed joints involve the tiles practically touching one another, whilst open joints comprise of a space between the tiles - generally of 5-10 mm. This choice must be made based on the following criteria:

Type Of Tile

In the case of an extruded tile, open joints are obligatory, because extrusion does not assure sufficiently accurate control of the dimensions to consent perfect contact between the tile.

Expected Stress On The Tile Layer

Open joints, allow a less rigid layer of tile to be obtained. This means that it is capable of adapting better to the stresses and deformatios induced by the underlying layers. Closed joints tend to make the tile layer behave like monolithic sheets.

Desired Aesthetic Effect

Close tiles can enhance the uniformity of the tiled surface, while open joints emphasize the sepatation between the individual tiles. These element can influence the appearance and aesthetic effect of your tiled surface.

4. SIZE AND POSITION OF EXPANSION JOINTS

Expansion or deformation joints are those discontinuities in the tiled surface, filled with deformable material, positioned with the following objectives:

Separation - of the tiled surface from fixed elements of construction such as columns, walls and baseboards.

Subdivide - tiled surfaces of large extensions into fields of conveniently limited dimensions in order to compensate for strain induced by variations in dimensions resulting from different causes.

Interruption - of the tiled surface in correspondence to any discontinuities in the support surface.

5. COMPOSITION OF THE SYSTEM AND DIMESIONS OF EACH LAYER

The composition of the entire systems and the dimensions of each layer are determined on the basis of the criteria and considerations discussed up to this point. It is important to document and note to this point what you feel are necessary aspects, and how these will influence your decisions.

Types of Tile Materials
The 3 Types of Tile Materials

Ceramic, Stone, and Quarry Tile Material

Today the tiles are the most preference to the industry and the household and both kitchen renovation and for bathroom renovation. It has been used since Roman times, and even though excellent manmade materials have become popular in recent years, tile is still valued for its beauty and cost-saving potential. All tile can be classed into three different types: ceramic, quarry, and stone.

Ceramic Tile

When we talk about tile being cost effective, we are talking about ceramic tile. While not all ceramic tile is cheap, it is possible to find bargain ceramic tile which still can add to the beauty of your home.

Ceramic tile starts with clay—shale, gypsum, and sand—and is worked into a material called bisque. The bisque is shaped into tiles and is fired in a kiln up to 2500° F. The higher the temperature, the stronger the tile will be.

By its very nature, ceramic tile is porous. So a glaze must be applied to the tile and then the tile is fired again to harden the glaze. Sometimes, the glaze is applied before the bisque is fired for the first time.

So the main value of ceramic tile, besides its possible cost-savings, is that it can be formed into an infinite variety of colors and shapes because it is made from scratch.

Quarry Tile

In the past, quarry tile came from quarries. Just like you see in old photographs of Vermont quarries, the tile was cut away, ground, and polished. But now manufacturets use the extrusion method for making a vitreous clay tile that is almost as hard as natural stone.

Quarry tile has a rough surface, which means that it is perfect for flooring because it provides a good grip. But it also means that quarry tile is not good for kitchen countertops because it is very porous. However, even though quarry tile can be sealed to make it less porous, it is still not appropriate for food preparation surfaces.

Stone

In recent years, granite has become the big winner in the kitchen design sweepstakes. It should be noted, though, that granite looks great but it does have its problems. Granite easily cracks, and like quarry tile it is porous, so it must be sealed and polished on a regular basis. Not only that, granite and marble are easily scratched and are not always resistant to high temperatures such as those from hot kitchen pots.

Still, the variegated coloring and texture of natural stone cannot be duplicated by ceramic tile. It is endlessly fascinating and provides unique design accents for your house. So, despite natural stone’s shortcomings, it still wins out from a design perspective
